The deadline extension for the defense of a dissertation or thesis is a procedure that aims to extend the period originally established for the completion of this important academic milestone. The process works as follows:
- The student's advisor must initiate a SEI process, located in the IE/CIC/PPGI folder, to formalize the deadline extension request.
- The student, in turn, must write and sign a solid justification that explains the real reasons behind the extension request. It is essential that this justification is convincing and based on genuine circumstances.
- In addition to the justification, the student must also prepare and sign a detailed schedule, describing the activities to be carried out during the requested extension period.
- The advisor, agreeing with the schedule defined by the student, must write and sign his own justification in a SEI-OPINION document.
- The complete SEI process is then forwarded to the PPGI coordination, who checks whether all necessary documents are in order.
- The PPGI coordination submits the request for analysis at a meeting of the Postgraduate Committee or by the PPGI Board.
- If the request is approved, the minutes of the meeting that approved the SEI process are included, recording the approved date in accordance with the maximum period established by CEPE Resolution No. 80/2017.
- With the approval of the extension, the PPGI secretariat/coordinator updates the defense date with the extension granted in the Integrated Academic Activities Management System (SIGAA).
- The PPGI secretary informs both the advisor and the student of the result of the request, ensuring transparent communication about the extension of time granted.
This procedure aims to ensure that students have adequate opportunity to complete their research and work effectively, respecting the deadlines established by academic regulations.
